The Composer
Manfred Plessl is an Austrian composer whose work moves between cinema, television, advertising, and stage.
His compositions combine classical musical training with a strong sense of narrative structure, atmosphere, and emotional timing. Working closely with directors, editors, and creative teams, he develops musical identities that support the rhythm and emotional depth of a story.
Born in Klagenfurt, Austria, Manfred studied composition and violin at the Kärntner Landeskonservatorium and chamber music at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid under Günter Pichler (Alban Berg Quartett). For over five years, he performed as the violist of the internationally acclaimed Acies Quartett, earning the Gradus ad Parnassum Prize (2006) and being named Ö1 Artist of the Year (2007).
Since 2004, he has worked as an independent composer through his production label New Conception of Sound (NCS). His scores have accompanied international cinema productions and broadcast documentaries for networks such as ORF, 3sat, and ServusTV, as well as feature films screened at major festivals and theatrical productions performed across Europe, the United States, and globally.
Approach
Manfred’s working process is collaborative and detail-oriented. He enters a project early, working from script or rough cut to develop a musical language that grows with the story. His palette ranges from intimate acoustic textures and classical string arrangements to electronic sound design and hybrid orchestral scoring.
His background as a trained violinist and chamber musician informs every score — an ear for dynamics, phrasing and the space between notes.
